My 330i lease
man, after so much waiting (I dont really negotiate much, I prefer the waiting game) my 330i is finally on the way to Los Angeles
330i Sparkling Graphite wood trim black leatherette (dont like leather) sport package active steering auto trans
$200 down and $621 a month for 48 months inc taxes, 12k miles
then its out of warranty when I return it and time to get a new car I guess (no idea what residual is, don't care - lol )

Of course, I had to part with more money up front, but I will have a car worth about 25K in 3 years and I will only owe about 10. 15K in equity gained for 4 extra K down.

Well, what was sticker price of your car? mine was 42 100 before tax
Also big difference between $200 down and $6000 down, as well as monthly payments of $40 per month extra adds up voer 4 years
Anyways I cant buy, have to run lease through my company to get maximum writeoff!
I bet the numbers work out pretty similar in the end....

If you can write off the lease as a business expense, it's a great way to go. No question. I wish I could do that too! Maybe one day I will have my own business.
But if you couldn't write it off, you would come out about $9K ahead on a purchase after 4 years, even with the $6000 down payment and 12 more months of payments. ($6000 down) + (12 x $660 for the extra 12 payments) + (48 x $40 for the extra amount per payment) = $15,840. But the car is still worth $25K or so (private party sale) after 4 years and 48K miles (based on a 2002 330i on kelley blue book), so you would have $9K "equity" in the car if you purchased after 4 years.
I've leased before without being able to write it off, and lived to regret it. (Sorry to all the dealers out there if I am spoiling your sales).
Shorter lease terms are generally better. 36 or 39 month lease maximizes the value in my experience. Extending the term does not lower the payment much (because it adds to the financed amount since you are "using" more of the car's value up over the longer term).
