About to pull the trigger on my Inspection II parts - pulleys required?
About 2 years ago (winter), my belts would squeak first thing in the morning. Of course the dealer couldn't reproduce it even after keeping the car overnight. It hasn't really done it lately. As part of a "ultimate" Inspection II, I currently have all pulleys, belts, and belt tensioners on the list (I figure I drive my car harder than normal.. so I need to maintain it more than normal). I guess my question is- what was causing the belts to squeak? The belts themselves, the tensioners, the pulleys.. a combination of 1&2, 1&2&3, etc? Do pulleys actually wear? Is that a stupid question? To see a full list of what I'm considering, click here. Items not on that list but that I will also need: oil, oil filter, coolant, transmission fluid, differential fluid. | | Reply » About to pull the trigger on my Inspection II parts - pulleys required? | I wouldn't worry about the pulleys. Belt tensioners - maybe - "while you're in there". Belts - definitely.
If the "squeak" you heard was more like a sustained squeal for several seconds, that was most likely a slightly loose belt or one that had gotten slightly slick from slipping. If you heard a regular chirp, chirp, chirp sound, that's probably a bearing - hopefully in a tensioner instead of the water pump or alternator, etc.

Yeah, it was a sustained squeal. Thanks for the input.

I forgot about the bearings in the pulleys.

I looked at your list. The only "pulley" I'd question is the water pump pulley. You should be able to reuse the original pulley unless it is damaged. But it's your car and your call.
