Audi DSG manual vs. BMW SMG

It's unclear when the SMG will be available on the E90. The BMW Car Club of America's "Roundel" magazine (at least I think that's where I remember seeing it), waxed rhapsodically about Audi's DSG transmission (two clutches, electronically engaged so that upshifts and downshifts are virtually instantaneous).

However, that transmission is apparently available only on the FWD Audi A3, and NO manual is available on the Quattro A4 with the 255 hp V6.

Has anyone read anything about the DSG migrating into the Audi A4? Is the gearbox compatible with the A4's AWD system? Has anyone driven the A3 with DSG?

I have never driven with SMG, but have drove an A3 with DSG. The DSG is SMOOTH. It shifts almost as smooth as a tiptronic. The shifts are also faster than what I can manage. I like it.

DSG is also the transmission for the 3.2L TT with quattro.

The DSG is also available with AWD in the Audi S3 and TT. So itīs compatible to AWD. I believe VW currently only has one type of DSG box though. And that can only take a certain amount of torque. Therefore the limited number of applications throughout the range. The A4 V6 is available with manual in Europe btw. So it seems like a marketing decision, not technical to not offer it in the US

Test drove an A3 with DSG the other day. Shifts are quite fast, much faster than the A4 with tiptronic that I also tried, and also very smooth . I read somewhere that DSG is not yet available for the A4 and A6 because it has not yet been configured to fit the A4's longitudinal engine placement....but Audi is working on this and hopefully will be available soon.

My curiosity piqued, I drove the A3 yesterday. Little 2-liter engine, but turbocharged with surprisingly little lag - still enough to be noticeable, however, and less pleasant build of power with revs than in the amazing RX8 (which is smooth and happy right up until the rev limiter buzzer chirps at 7800 rpm).

However, the DSG really IS awesome. Quick, smooth upshifts AND downshifts. I didn't get into a situation where the need to drop down more than one gear; e.g., after heavy braking, delayed the shift. If they put this box into their higher end cars it will sway some folks.

I did NOT think the "fit and finish" of the interior was a match for BMW, however, and (at least on the A3 in the US, you can't get things like sports seats and power seat adjustments at the same time, and for now you can't get Audi's "quattro" AWD system either (it's supposedly arriving, along with their 5-valve V6, in the fall.

The seats were not nearly as comfortable or supportive as the BMW 330's sport seats, in my view, and the rear seat was definitely a compromise.
