Is the base Stereo as good as the HK system in the E46? If you were happy with the HK would you be happy with the stock stereo?

A related question is, for the cost of the Logic7 or less, can one have a better 3rd party system installed.

I can't speak from personal knowledge, but the strong consensus seems to be that the new base stereo is definitely better than the E46 HK. Aftermarket is too $$ to be a viable option due to all the wiring issues (esp. with digital climate control).

I haven't listened to the base stereo, but the upgraded one in the 330i sounds extremely good.

imho the e46 HK is lack luster (which I own). Acura's Bose system beats the crap out of mine.
In the e46, if you care about the stereo that much, I'd skip the HK and upgrade after market.
Given that I haven't tried an e90 yet it all depends if they did a good job upgrading it in the e90.
I partially agree with not wanting to go the after market route due to electrical issues, but I was able to install an infinity sub w/built in amp, without issue into the back of my e46hk without issue.
