I'll give a short review:

I love the car overall. All of my friends are very impressed with it too.

My complaints:

-Navigation doesn't show phone numbers for destinations or allow for phone number destination input (Even Chrysler's have this feature!)

-I love the iDrive, but when selecting an option, you often have to wait 1 to 3 seconds to get to the menu of the option you selected. I don't think idrive is a particularly processor intensive piece of software--the menu should appear instantaneously. Also, I don't like how you have to push the iDrive knob with a fair amount of force to select a menu (i.e. selecting "entertainment" from the main screen.)

I guess that's about it.

2002 facelifted E46 330i - TiAg/Black'ow/Myrtle; Cold; Prem; Sport; Steptronic

2006 E90 330i - TiAg/Black'ow/Aluminum; Cold; Prem; Sport; 6sp

- Engine performance -
Advantage E90 - revs freely, smoother, pulls from 1500 to 6k ... 'nough said
- Suspension / Ride comfort -
Advantage E90, handles like on rails ... where's the limit?, E90 less body roll, runflats have less road feel; E90 quieter; E90 brakes are top notch
- Interior ergonomics / quality -
Advantage E90, fit and finish excellent; miss console window switches, miss trunk independent locking, less headroom in rear; Advantage E90, Logic 7 is very good > HK ... mp3 support; E90 flawless Bluetooth with voice dial
- Shifting / Gearbox -
Advantage E90 ... 6sp is better
- Conclusion

Both are great cars. I would have kept my E46 except for:

a) wanted a 6sp
b) too many E46's at work ... dime a dozen; wanted something new
c) 4 more years of free maintenance
d) handsfree bluetooth

c & d would have cost me $2K to continue with the E46 and I'd rather put that kind of money into a new car

Advantages E90:

Engine; transmission; handling; high tech features - what makes a BMW a BMW

I didn't have an E46 but I did have an 1998 E36 M3 with the 3.2 liter 240 hp engine. I have about 500km on my 330i 6Sp with sport pack, and it reminds me of the M3 in almost every way. Handling/ braking seem as good and it pulls it better on top than the M3. I was surprised at how M like the 330 feels, I thought it would have been much softer with less steering effort.

The E90's performance numbers are quite similar to the E36 M3 so I 'm not surprised it feels as good.

If I had to describe the 330 with sport pack and 6 speed in one word, I would say it's "Serious". This is not a daily driver for a secretary. Around town it is actually somewhat fatiguing to drive, but get it out on the open road and it is very rewarding. It takes effort to drive it but there is payback with incredible feedback and roadfeel. It's very easy to catch a slide and so controllable you want to do it all the time. It begs to be driven hard. It is not a good cruising car.
