I have orderd my 335ci with comfort access, but I started worrying after reading that soccer player David Beckham had not one but two custom-designed BMW X5 SUVs stolen, the most recent theft occurred in Madrid, Spain. Police believe an auto theft gang using software instead of hardware pinched both of Beckham's BMWs. Here is the article: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3513_7-6516433-1.html Should we worry? |

I didn't think that generation of X5 had comfort access - I think it was the old style keyless entry that'd been hacked, not saying the comfort access can't be hacked. I'd say the safest thing is to stay out of Madrid.

Should we worry? | If you were as famous as David Beckham and constantly had a thousand different people following you around obsessed with everything about you... then yes.
Considering this article was in May of 2006, it was an old X5 which did not come with comfort access. So they probably just got a duplicate key made from a not-so-legal dealer after they obtained the VIN.

Most criminals are stupid, that is why they have to steal. They will use flatbeds, etc. and not state of the art technology. In a few years time this will become more of an issue as the hacking tools will be common place. First gen CA cars will be the target. I suspect CA will get better encryption before long.
