Drove it on an old road from my youth. I used to take this road whenever I did something new to the 2002. Old habits die hard, I suppose.
It was a Sport Premium, six speed manual. This car's handling- in a word- rocks. Point it and it goes. I never felt like it would leave the road. Kinda scary- Like I wonder if you'll be warned before it really DOES leave the road.
To be fair to the purist, I will submit that I was NOT in tune with every pebble on this very rough asphalt. IN the '75 '02, I can actually FEEL the words "SEWER" on the manhole covers. But I have to work and worry about the changing road surfaces. This thing- WOW.
It doesn't feel as fast as our '02 E46 330, but I think that's cause it's more quiet and I didnt get the feed back oin the wheel like I do the E46. Look down and I'm going 75 on a straight away. It runs past 60 in second gear.
Not as tourqey as our E39 540. That's to be expected, but I sure didnt have to work as hard to get it around a sharp bend. The car is nice. I dunno if we'll own one without an M designation as the E46 will serve it's function for some years to come.

Thanks for the summary. I've been looking for reviews from E39 owners, because I saw the E90 in my dealer's lot and was stunned at how much I liked the exterior. I haven't had much time to test drive one yet, but I wonder if it would be a viable candidate to replace my E39 someday. I figure that with my loan payment + repairs + maintenance, I'm paying the same $ per month as I would if I went with a new 330.
What makes me even more curious is the larger interior space (vs. my old E46)...I wonder if it compares well to the E39?

Nice writeup, Prop! I thought the same thing regarding the speed. I didn't stomp on it though, since it only had delivery miles.
Btw, if you were in the Ti Silver/Black ZSP/ZPP 6sp that every dealer got as their demo mule, it did not have AS.
Only 7 more days til I leave for Munich to pick up mine, and I cannot wait!
