Do you go with Nav or not?

There are many posts from people who ordered Nav and those who are against it. Let's find out how many of us are in favour of this and for what reasons.

In option 3, I meant: lack of touchscreen, DVD instead of HDD, poor software, removal of FM/CD/MP3 player, etc. As alternatives, you can consider PDA, portable GPS (Garmin etc), Car PC (see: http://www.dashpc.com/) and others.

It's $300-400 worth of equipment and software but they still charge $2k for it, just as the auto world did 6-7 years ago. Obviously, Navi is not worth $2k by any stretch. And if people were really that worried about getting lost they can pick up $400 worth of GPS/Navi software and an Ipaq. Plus those are portable. So directions are not the issue either...

I ordered my first car without navi back in Feb. Saw the demo car, didn't like the flat dash, like the high tech feel of navi and i-drive, changed my ordered. The wait starts all over again.... 2 months ...... that's end of June, but I am sure I will have no regret for having the navi.

As a design nut I am all about the intagration. I-drive is a great idea, but still has a way to go. the whole force-feedback thing is brilliant and is clearly the future, it's just going to take a while. Sadly it is not the obvious near-perfect GUI that the mouse was back when the mac first hit the shelves. The Idrive wheel is basically the ipod click wheel for your car. It's a good interface it just needs better software.

It is certainly miles better than some non intagrated PDA sitting on the passenger seat or god forbid kluged to the dash board with some crazy suction-cup-cigerette-lighter-bracket-I -found-in-a-catalog-on-the-Airplane-nonsense. I am not trying to offend anyone it's just the idea of spending 40k+ on a car with super clean lines and then having wires and brackets all over the place makes my head spin. Not to mention the actual use. As cluncky as Idrive is, it is much simpler than an ipaq with a stylus (at least in the context of sitting in the driver seat of a car).

Yeah there are probles with the BMW Nav, but I beleive they are on the right track and am willing to part with a little extra cash to support the effort.

Now once they get the Ipod track titles to show up on the nav screen.....

No nav here. I'll continue to buy 3-series cars as long as they make things like nav, idrive, and active steering optional. The other deal breaker is the moonroof - right now they are standard and you can't order a car without one. Hopefully they will offer the M3 without one for the purists.

I agree with you that integrated iDrive is nice and also adds to the look of the car. But, in my opinion, saying that PDA is stupid and built-in Nav is the way to go is highly exaggerated.

You are paying 2k for something that looks already outdated (come on, no touchscreen?!) and probably is not worth more than $500. Imagine 3rd party GPS Nav system without touchscreen and operated with a knob. How many of these would be sold? For sure they would need to be priced way below more advanced solutions.

I think buying a German car is an excellent idea but it's better to consider Japan as a source of the electronic gadgets.

Also, is it better to have iDrive that allows to change settings of the car (which you rarely do on a daily basis) or car-PC for half the price which has touchscreen, GPS, cameras, video, mp3, internet, traffic info etc? In fact, I could install a car-PC with a touchscreen in the same dashboard that built-in Nav is offered (if I could get such a dashboard separately for a decent price).
