 A Few Test Drive Thoughts

Today I drove the 330 6spd. sport pack. It was at lunch in traffic in a combo mid-town/residential area, so no twisty roads or high speeds. Here are a few quick observations:

The clutch was nicely balanced, neither too firm nor too easy and the engagement point was precise without being too fussy. The shifter was great - I never came close to missing.

The ride is just right. You feel the road but are never bounced or jarred. I went over several stretches of rough pavement with no discomfort.

The torque curve is indeed flat - the engine pulls strongly from 2000 - 5000 (too much traffic to go higher). I didn't feel the hesitation issue but traffic and lights precluded much hard acceleration.

The turn signals are a bit hard to get used to. They go on without clicking into place. I kept fumbling around to turn them off after a lane change.

I set the stereo to flat and music mode for Logic 7, then put in Santana's Abraxas. I kept the volume down for the sake of my passanger salesperson and talking but turned it up for a few minutes. It sounded strong and clear without any gimmicky surround quality. Definitely an improvement over the old HK premium setup.

The car is very quiet on the road - quieter than my old 5 series. I think this contributes to a feeling you are going more slowly than what is actually so.

It reminds me a bit of an M5 I once drove (except for the power) - smooth and refined, easy to putt around in, yet ready to leap forward whenever you wish. I had no complaints.

Thanks for the review.

I'm looking forward to test driving the E90 in the next month or two.

Why wait so long? No car available in a week or 2?

Just test drove one myself and just loved it!!

Since they ran out of the manual transmission, I had to drive an automatic 330i. First off, the engine power is just simply awesome. I took it on the freeway and in no time the car reached 90mph. You can barely feel that it's going that fast. I had driven both Acura TL and Infiniti G35 before and the Japanese ones are no match at all. And even on high speed, the car is amazingly quiet. One of the things that I often do comparing cars is to see where is the tacometer when it's going at 65mph, and the 330i's is hovering around the low 2k. For me personally (no scientific backup whatsoever) this means the engine is tuned optimally. Cornering feels awesome.

Next I would like to talk about the creature comforts that are just wonderful to have. I just love how the turn signals work. With first click, the signal blinks for a few seconds and then turn off on its own, a wonderful feature for lane changing. Used it multiple times on the freeway and it frees up your hand for some other more important things like, playing with the audio system.

The cruise control is very cool. Once you selected a speed, you will see two indicators. One is on the speedometer itself where a small dot will jump up as soon as a speed is selected. Then on the trip computer area where it indicates your selected speed.

I also love the fact that the exterior mirrors fold with just a touch of a button. This is very useful especially when you have to park at a tight spot and not wanting some idiots to bump into the mirrors.

Audio sounded magnificent. What can I say, it is just spectacular to listen to the awesome surround sound while you drive.

The only gripe I have is that the turn signal lights are red instead of amber. But with me driving inside for the most part, I can live with that.

Just got back from testing a 330 SG auto, black interior, PP, but no Sport and it's smoothhhh.

Didn't drive it very long as the dealership was about to close, but long enough. Before I knew it, the car was doing 50 in a 35 zone.

As others have mentioned, the side mirrors are a tad small, have to get use to it. The key push button starter is a waste of time. Either do one or the other.

There was a bit of lag in the auto from 0 though. I don't feel a lag in my current Accord.

Saw an Artic 325 too and the color has too much purplish and green in it. I saw at dusk though.

Hoping to get an order done this month for an ED in Oct.

I just test drove the silver 330i SP 6-speed car. It was a pretty short drive but I enjoyed it quite a bit. The car is beautiful inside and out. I really like the SP wheels - M68 successor? The engine reminds me of the 240hp E36 M3 a lot in terms of power output, although it isn't nearly as raspy and rev-happy. This one only had about 550 miles on it so far, so it's not anywhere close to being broken in. It felt like it had more mid-range power than my car for sure, and a little more responsiveness in the lower rpms. The car didn't feel much faster than mine, but I attribute that to the low miles and extra weight over the E46.

The dash looks like it is made of a cheaper material than the E46, and the cupholders are a little silly looking although I would probably be able to forget they are there. I didn't like the wood trim on the inside - it looked funny with an aluminum colored shifter knob. I'm not sure if that was intended or not since these are demo cars.

I am pleased to report that all of the things I love about driving a BMW were left intact. The car handles nicely and the ride is very good even with the (undetectable?) run-flat tires. I didn't think to check if the car had the active steering, but my guess is that it didn't. The SP steering wheel feels nice and thick like the M series wheel but the materials look a little cheaper like the dash.

The bottom line for me is this:

There are many more likes than dislikes, and the good far outweighs the bad. I absolutely love the exterior of the car and the inside is forgiveable. I like how the interior has some of the same character as the 'flame-surfaced' exterior, like the top of the dash and the center console. I like the fact that active steering and idrive can be excluded, but I don't like that the moonroof is forced upon you. I would gladly pay the price of that option for it not to have one. This is a deal breaker for me, but hopefully this will change during the life cycle of the car. I'm really more interested in the E90 M3, so maybe things will be different with the standard equipment on it.

Not much new info here, if at all, but these are my thoughts so far.
