Quick Question....

My X5 has not had an oil service since Dec '05 since the mileage is low, now I am getting the "Oil is low" message. I called the dealer and I am told...go buy oil and put it in (a bit surprised by that). They will not service the vehicle until the "bars" go out. My other option is I can bring in the car for the yearly Oil service, but they will not do a full service since my "bars" are not out and I would have to come back when that last "bar" goes out.

Does this make any logical sense?

Yes. I had the same thing happen on my 325xiT just a few weeks ago. It is too soon for my first service, yet I was one quart down. I just went to the parts counter at the dealer and grabbed a quart of oil. It was really easy.

You both do understand in your manual you are entitled to one complimentary oil service per year for low mileage cars. I bought my car in '04, and only put 7500 miles on it per year, and get the complimentary service from a dealership I didn't purchase my car from. Also, for the OP, since DECEMBER of '05? That's pretty far back, I'd go in to get that oil changed.

Oh yeah, but mine isn't a low mileage car. I have 13,000 miles on it (ED last July). On start-up, the OBC says 3200 miles before service. So, I just added a quart. And I agree that I'd spring for a change once per year if I didn't drive so darn much...

Understand about the one free oil service, just doesn't make sense that they would wait to do the inspection when it is so close. Also, I asked "can I swing by and you guys will top off my oil for me" which they replied...if you buy the oil we will add it for you. Pretty amazed, on my audi they will top off any fluids that I need as I need

Well, you asked for our opinion, and here it is: It is not prudent of you to have skipped the free oil service. You should have gotten the free oil service, and requested them NOT to reset the oil service clock, and you would have received the upcoming service as well. Live and learn, and go put oil in your BMW, I pay for one service per year and receive a free one as well, b/c I care about the engine in my car. You purchased a high end SAV, I'm sure you have the funds to pay for a little oil, since you decided not to utilize the free service.
