Yet another saw it in person but didn't drive it post

Blah Blah Blah! You are all probably sick of all these "I saw it andlooks sharp", "I saw it and I hate it" type of post so here you go. Another one to the collection.
Here's my 2 cents from tonight's 3 Series presentation at the Palace hotel in San Francisco.
I went there with an honest desire to like this car and I left with very mixed feelings. Mostly negative. The car looks good from the outside which is a surprise. It is Bangle's least ****ed up child but the rear is simply terrible. It will probably be the first facelift in a couple years. It is completely out of place. The lights look like they were taken off from a different car and glued onto the metal. It is tragic. Other than that the design is a pleasant surprise. The car looks (unfortunately) much bigger, longer and wider but when you sit inside it really isn't. Front room is the same, side room is the same. Yes, rear passangers do get a little more leg room. Now on to the worst part so we can have it out of the way quicker- interior. I just don't get those who say that the interior on par with E46. It is tragic. The only better thing is leather quality appears better and sport seat bolsters seem more resistant to wear. Other than that the quality of plastic (did you actually touch it and pull it and squeeze it) is getting dangerously close to American standards. It's not there yet but it is close. I'm not even talking about the whole idiotic "I'm on a yacht and not a car" design for the front dash but simply material choices. Plastics look and feel cheaper and more hmmm...plasticky!. Take a look at sides of the dashboard or plastic door panels. They are terrible, they feel like they are going to fall of. Some things are taken straight from E46 like window regulators (except are placed on the doors), blinker switches. Those look decent. Cupholders are simply ridiculous. That CD looking stuff coming out of the dashboard that looks like its going to break after 50 uses - pleeeaaase. They clearly seem like an afterthought added ad hoc for the american market. Dash display and radio controls seem very detached from the driver and unattractive.
Trunk seems decidedly bigger. It is visibly wider and longer and deeper. You can tell with a naked eye. Shifter, clutch and gas have a similar placement and feel to my ZHP. Shifter has touch longer throws but just as precise and positive.
Dash seems actually very short. Maybe it's so that you have an optical illusion that the car is not as long as it is. I don't know but I didn't like that. Adjustible side bolsers are a nice touch.
All in all I was disappointed. I will still consider a wagon when they bring one here especially if they bring a diesel in a couple years.

ok...well..hmm...all i can say after reading that is that in my opinion it doesnt sound you went there wanting to like the car...it sounds like you went there trying to find everything you could find wrong with the car....

also...why would you consider buying a car you were so dissapointed with?...

It is only natural that people will have a bias one way or the other. Of course people who recently bought E46's are going to trash the E90 to reaffirm their decision, just like others who have placed an order for an E90 are going to rave about it.

For whatever it's worth, I've been waiting for more than a year to get a loaded e90. I thought it looked great in pics and the interior was a big improvement. Then I went to go test drive it a few days ago. It drives more like the next generation Acura TL. It definately lost that "one-with-the-road" feel. I was very disappointed....still am disappointed. How could they screw up the one thing the seperates BMW from the rest? The feedback just isn't there in this car; less direct steering, softer ride and heavier feel. Why would BMW isolate the driver?? Isn't that the whole frickin' point!!! I talked myself into test driving one more time to make sure I'm not off my rocker. At any rate, I may still get this car, but looking at other options now. I don't really even know what else to look at!?! I want a 4-door ultimate driving machine? The 5-series is too big for my taste.

That makes me a little happier with my decision to buy a 2005 325i. I went to the dealership this past Thursday and took a look at the e90. I completely agree with everyone who said the car looks a lot better in person. I must admit that when I went to take a look I was a little biased since I had just shelled out the money for an e46. However, when I saw the car, I was in awe. Although I hated the rear of the car from all the pictures I saw, it looked great in person. Overall I thought the exterior of the car was great. The interior also looked a lot better when I was actually sitting in the car. But just peaking through the window it looked as bad as it does in the pictures, imho.

Although the car is nice, I can honestly say that I like the interior of the e46 much better. While I sat in the e90 I was considering trading in my car. But when I got back into my car I realized how much better I thought the e46 interior is. However, as far as the exterior goes, the e46 is definitely looking old in my eyes.

Not that I prefer one over the E90 but, many Festers who share your disappointment have been pointing out the new Lexus IS350. Don't know how 'disconnected' that ride might be considering that Lexus prides itself on isolation, but it might be worth a test drive.
