For what it is worth I always have it written into my new car contracts that if the car is delivered with swirl marks [usually from unskilled and fast dealer prep detailing] that I will reject it and the dealer will have to deliver another new car.

Usually this has meant that I am given the car with only the protective plastic removed from the panels and nothing else done to it, which is fine by me.

I have found that swirls can avoided by [1] spraying the car with water first to remove loose dirt [2] use only soft clean mits/rags with natural fibers, [3] wash the car using strokes in the direction of the wind passing over the car and [4] add a little powdered starch to the wash bucket.

Works like a charm.

What exactly do they do that creates the swirl marks? Some kind of washing? If yes, can I just ask the dealer not to wash my car after it comes from ED?
