I would never buy a BMW without the sports package or manual tranny (although I could be tempted by an SMG if given a good test drive)

I hate the sport seats but will live with them for the rest of the package. My 2001 530i with sport package did not include sport seats and I love it.

The opposite is so for me - I get it because of the seats. The other stuff is nice but no big deal.

To me, I find it a very big deal. After driving a non-sport E46 and a SP E46, there was a large difference. I felt the non-SP drove nice, but not enough to set it apart from other cars and justify the price. The SP however showed me that they truley are driving machines.

Do you mean the suspension or the seats make the bigest difference in the driving experience?
