"German cars are also beginning to look less reliable than Japanese ones, and Consumer Reports says the Infiniti G35 is more reliable than the 3 Series.
Asked for comment on this, BMW board member Burkhard Goschel said in an interview at the media preview that the new 3 Series would be more reliable than the old model, because of more sophisticated technology in areas such as the engines' self-checking systems."

2 past problems that i've had were sensors that were meant to make the car more reliable.

Did you check out their slideshow review of the new 3? They made tons of mistakes (325i isn't a 2.5L anymore in the US) and they bashed iDrive pretty hard. Then they went on to say it doesn't have enough torque or hp. They actually put in the review something like, compared to a sports car, you press the gas and it just doesn't go as fast. Wow. I should get a job at Forbes writing their car reviews.

Quote: | And who is going to check those self-checking thingies ? | Yeah-- it seems that BMW (or maybe German auto companies in general) still don't really understand how to make cars w/ fewer problems. Their solution is to add MORE complexity in the form of added diagnostic systems. The better solution would be to simplify and reduce unncessary electronic features/complexity. From what I've read, it seems that this is one of the strategies that Mercedes is using to attack their quality issues-- they're reducing hte amount of electronic features. It would probably also help their quality to adopt something like the Toyota Production system and get serious about finding and addressig "root causes" of problems as soon as they come up.
ANway, adding some additional engine diagnostics isn't going to address 90% of the types of problems people faced (and were annoyed by) w/ the e46 such as window regs, control arms, etc. For those, I think the solution would be: 1. try to improve existing parts rather than re-engineeering (where possible). For example, back when Mercedes was still the leader in quality, they used the same door latch design for 40+ years. Same thing w/ stuff like window regs: fix the e46 design, test it and leave it alone. 2. Think twice before using plastic parts in certain areas (like the cooling system). Adding a little cost and weight may be well worth the reduce hassle and problems that may result 3. Take small problems seriously, and fix them as soon as they come up "in the field"

Well... He does work for BMW. Did you expect him to say that the new 3 is going to less reliable than the previous model?
