 Roundel's article on E90

I just finished reading the E90 article in Roundel.
To put it in perspective, the E90 is BMW's cash cow, responsible for half of all sales. The last model to implement the Bangle/Hooydonk style. All previous such implementations were controversial, to say the least. A 3-series update only happens once every 6 years.
Of all the Roundel articles over the past 12 months, this is the most important.

My conclusion: Absolutely terrible. In fact, it's the worst written article I recall reading in that magazine. I've been a subscriber for 4 years now.
It failed to mention many of the high tech features/innovations, such as the brakes.
But most importantly, it did not mention the most controversial feature of them all: iDrive. What kind of review would let iDrive out?

Bottom line: it did not inspire me to upgrade to an E90. It did not even motivate me to go to the dealership on the day of launch. I probably will go there sometime to see it, but I'd do that on my own anyways, with or without reading the Roundel article.
OTOH, the Roundel article on the new M5 (a couple of issues back) made me want to take a second mortgage to go buy one. I have changed my mind since, but if I had the cash at that moment, I would have done some financial harm to myself.
I'm safe with the E90.

Are you actually expecting an impartial review from Roundel?

I was disappointed in the article too...mostly fluff.

Absolutely not.
I was expecting them to motivate me to trade in. I'm a willing audience and they failed.

I have the same thoughts about the article, and the Roundel magazine in general. I just continue to be a member for the discounted parts at my delaership, but they know me so well now that they don't even ask to see the membership card. And there's always Crevier BMW and Pacific BMW whose parts are already discounted to begin with.

Maybe it's time to stop renewing. But on second thought, it may come in handy when it's time to use their "membership rewards" (rebates on new and certified cars).

I was thinking (and hoping) that the e90 article was sort of like one of those "first drive' or "preview" articles that you see in the major car magazine. They're usually followed by a more complete test. If I recall correctly, Roundel has done in-depth stories on all new BMW models.
