Sequential Manual Gearbox is a clutchless manual transmission. The clutch is operated electohydrolicaly.

In the E46 M3, you can get either traditional 6-speed manual and also 6-speed SMG.

As the poster states above, the SMG is "clutchless" manual.

Actually, the SMG uses the same 6-speed manual tranny, but in addition, there is a electro-hydraulic controlled clutch. Shifts are made with either paddles on the steering wheel or a console-mounted shifter. You don't even have to lift the accelerator during the shift (when hit the "+" paddle, the computer will ease off the throttle and shift up to the next gear quickly and accurately). The best part is downshifting with the SMG where the computer will double clutch and help you rev-match your downshifts.

Check out this link for a review of SMG II in the E46 M3 and also a SMG FAQ.

Hope this help.

Does anyone know if the SMG will be upgraded from the Z4 / E46 in the E90?

SMG-III Jr.? Same fast shifting, only 6 gears, 4 modes? Likely?

Same SMG from the Z4. This one is actually called the SSG for those getting technical aboui it. Its different from the M3 SMGII. SMG III is the 7 speed SMG that will be found on the M5 and M6.

Hi Folks,
I wonder how people can declare for sure that the E90 with have the SSG and not the SMG. My dealer tells me that SMG might be better in the E90 given its new engine that delivers better torque. Anyway, BMW has made no announcement about SMG except that it will be available only in the models from September 2005 onwards. I personally feel that if they have to delay the SMG there's a good reason for it and it might well be that its the newer version (if it were just the same old SMG/SSG why shld they wait till september?)
