When installing new brake pads, does anyone pick up some of this from the parts counter?

No, I use some different anti-squeak stuff that I bought awhile ago (in a jar that hasn't run out yet). Not a big deal if you don't.

The last set of OEM pads I bought, Jurid, I believe, had a plastic shim riveted to the backing plate.
