First Use of Mobile Mechanic - Help

Hi Folks -

After 27 years of dealerships and indy shops and getting a recent whopping estimate for some repair work to my 1998 528i A, I decided it was time to go direct to a former BMW mechanic who has his own one man show.

I recently brought my 1987 535i (bought new 12/86) up to snuff at considerable expense, so I am trying to manage the costs downward! Plus, I figure I can learn something as the work is done.

I am having front struts and thrust arms replaced, rear upper control arms, the valve cover gasket replaced, the tranny, brake, oil and diff fluids replaced as well as a new water pump, expansion tank, spark plugs and some induction type clean out.

Any advise on how to best manage this process would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much!!

No advice for managing your mechanic.

I will say keep good communication and dont pay in advance. Some of the home guys take forever to get work done. If you pay up front the motivation is not there.

Is there a question in there? I don't understand what you are asking. Take it to him, let him work on it, pay him, take home. Am I missing something?
