Does anybody know when SMG will be available on the E90 and if it will be changed from what I experienced today in a 2005 Z4? I'm inclined to get a manual transmission. Will the SMG disappoint? I really don't like my current Steptronic (2001 330i). Smooth, but boring. Great in traffic of course, but I would rather be in charge of things. That's why I worry about getting an SMG.

As far as how similar to the present one, I think SMGs in general are a work in progress and we might see further refinements over time. I suspect, however, that it will be close to the one you you tried in the Z4.

There are rumours that the non-M-SMG on the E90 might be a double clutch unit such as the DSG by Audi.
That would put it into a completely different league than the current SMG
Funny thing about the DSG ist that some people are not too happy with the DSG because it is "too good". it shifts without ANY loss of drive (even better than a slush) so you get no real sensation of changing gears (except aural and on the tach). Not very satisfying to drivers who like their cars to feel fast as well as beeing fast.
At least thatīs the reason M-Gmbh gives for sticking with the single clutch setup for their M-SMG.

The current generation sounds like a crude cob job that emulates the shifting of a really bad stickshift driver. I like to ease through the synchros and bring the power in smoothly so that shifts can't be felt by passengers.
