can u skip gears
i was wondering if you are able to skip gears while down shifting? i am a new driver so i need some help. also with a stick shift what is the best way to slow down to come to a stop??

It's not bad to skip gears in either direction. | Yeah, but the difference is that the GM cars with the skip-shift feature (which only works at low RPMs, by the way) usually have around 400 ft/lbs. of torque to compensate for those skipped gears....

GM also uses taller gear ratios for better MPG as well which make skipping gears even more difficult. That 1-4 skip shift on GM vehicles can be dangerous at times. I don't know anyone in an LSx based car that actually keeps the skip shift in play. GM makes it easy to remove with a 25 cent resistor.

By this I mean you are looing ahead and see that the light is red. INstead driving up to the red light at full speed you let off the gas, as the speed comes down, you downshift to a lower gear and continue to coast to a slower speed.
Downshifting in a high braking situation can lead to looking back the way you came from. Because there is no ABS for a screwed up downshift, you can stop the rear wheels, leading to a VERY quick 180 spin. BT, DT in the race car.
2) As for skipping gear on downshifting, no big deal. As long as the gear you select is OK for the road speed. I normally skip gears on the downshift in my race car. NO reason to make 2 downshifts when one will suffice, but I do the downshift late in the barking zone.
3) As for skipping going up, no big deal. And BTW synchros do little to nothing on upshifts because the gearsets naturally slow down and match speeds.

Quote: ... I, fortunately, had nobody in the family who could teach me (for a variety of reasons), so I downloaded a guide written by a PCA instructor and taught myself. This particular guide emphasized learning the mechanics of the transmission itself so that the driver could understand what was happening inside the gearbox whenever various levers or pedals were pushed or manipulated. I swear by that method to this day. Visualizing the synchros spooling or thinking of the clutch disc meeting the flywheel made it much easier for me to understand why things should be done a certain way. I remember the arguments I got into with friends who thought that rev-matching (as I did) was the WRONG way to downshift ("Why do you always drive like you're on a track?" ), and that slipping the clutch (because their dad taught them that) was the RIGHT way, and there was no way I could be right and their dads could be wrong. ... |
