Hey everyone...first post. I've been looking around the forums all day, but I haven't seen any posts with similair situations.
I live in NJ and I am trading in my '05 Jeep Wrangler for a '97 M3 Sedan at a dealer in Ohio. I own the Jeep clean and clear and I have the title. I plan on driving out to OH tomorrow to get the car.
My question is: After we sign both titles infront of the notary, wouldn't I take the M3 title for my drive back to NJ in the M3? Then in NJ I would go to the DMV. But when I spoke to the dealer last night he briefly mentioned how the M3 title must be processed through the state of Ohio and that it takes a couple of days and then the title is mailed to me. So I'm a little confused on how the whole process works.
What if something happens on my drive back to NJ and I get pulled over by the police. Will it be a problem without the title?
Also, one more thing: In NJ we own our license plates and are allowed to transfer them to a new car. So will it be ok to slap on my NJ plates to the M3 for my drive home? Or will I need temp plates? Would the temp plates be from OH or NJ?
Thanks for any insight. I cant wait to finally own a BMW!

i am no expert on this but i believe that as long as you have a bill of sale, or something proving that you own the car, you should be alright in case you get pulled over. as for the plates, i also believe you have a week to transfer things over. things may be different for you, as i am going by the way things are in mass. good luck!
oh, and welcome to the fest!

I purchased a M3 in Ohio last fall and the dealer took care of everything including a 30 day temp plate from Ohio. You will have a bill of sale from the dealer so you are OK in case you are pulled over. It takes the Ohio DMV about 10 days to send you your Ohio title that you will need to register your new car. We registered in NY but I am sure NJ will be about the same. Jack

The seller should provide you with a bill of sale, which is different from the title. Most states also issue temporary (paper) tags, which are normally valid for 20 days (or so). You can drive home on the temp tags. After receiving the title, you can go to NJDMV and get the car registered. You will pay the sales tax at that time also.

K-bit, did you happen to get your M3 from Car Locators Inc., in Cincinnati? http://www.carlocatorsinc.com/
