 Delayed Tradein

Has anyone had the situation where they trade in a car for an ED purchase, but the dealer delays taking in the trade until delivery of the car in the U.S.? Obviously, I would like to cover the intervening period between returning from Europe and taking delivery of the car.

That may be tough to do since in theory you already complete all financing and take ownership of the vehicle in Munich. I would be hard pressed to find a dealer that would do this. You may be able to have them buy the car from you for a predetermined value and an anticipated date but that may be about it. Get a long term rental deal working with a local agency... It may not be much more than a monthly BMW payment.
Best of luck!

hey rcw2016,
my brother-in-law and myself are doing our ED on 3/6 (YAY) and i just dealt with this situation for him. our dealership was willing to take the trade-in after we got his car back to NY but there are some issues with that.

1. They will re-evaluate your car at the later date and might (most likely will) end up giving you less for it depending on the extra mileage and if there is anything different with the car (like scratches/dents or any other damage).
2. You will not get the tax break if you don't trade in your car at of finalizing the PO and if your car is worth a good chunk of change that's a lot of money to forego.

we had to finalize our POs 1 month before we pick-up. based on this situation i would recommend you find out how much it would cost you to rent a car for 2 to 3 months (YMWV depending on PO finalization date, how long you are in europe, and how long it takes for redelivery) and see if that's less than the tax savings you'd get from trading in now plus the savings on not paying car insurance for 2 or 3 months.

i hope i was clear and that this helps you decide what to do.
