 New to BMW World

Hi group,

I am relatively new to the world of BMWs. I have been thinking about getting one next year once my lease is up on my current vehicle. I'd probably start off with a pre-owned one to kind of get a feel for it before I go sink a load of cash into a nice, new one. My question is - some of the pre-owned BMWs I've seen lately have 120,000 to 150,000 miles on them. I've heard of other cars such as Honda and Toyota being able to go for this long with no problems if properly maintained. What is BMWs stance on their cars with this many miles? Should I stay away from ones that have this many miles? What would be a good mileage to go for? I'd plan on keeping the car for at least a couple of years. Thanks.

Carl

Short answer is no... don't do it. Engine & drivetrain nearly bulletproof. Electrical = can be ok, but can be nightmares; suspension, brakes, etc are expensive to repair/replace. It all depends on what your budget it. Some have had about average expenses for a car like the one you describe, but typically, the BMW will be quite a bit more expensive to maintain than the average Japanese model. You might be better off putting down a small upfront fee and leasing a new 325 sedan for 3 years.... but with this topic, search is your friend.

I have a nice, gently used 2001 330i 5-speed with around 40k miles on it (NOVA) that I might consider selling to a nice guy looking to get into the world of BMWs for only $20k or so (I just bought a Boxster and really don't need the second car).

Carl, I would consider leasing a new one. The trick is to read the "ask a dealer" forum and look for situations where BMW has incentives. The difference in cost is almost unbelievable at times. For example last year they had a great deal on the Z4. Used BMWs out of warranty can be expensive, very expensive if something goes wrong.
