in less than 2 weeks after i got the 335cic, arctic metallic, i got the first ding in work parking lot where i parked for almost 5 years without a problem. i parked at the farthest corner and was at least 1.5 ft from the line to the next parking space. a woman parked close to mine and banged my car when her butt pushed her door into my car. there was a slight dent and chipped paint. she left a note and number for me about what happened which i appreciated, even though i wanted to scream at her but didn't.
i took it to dealership for an estimate. because of the location of the ding (on the edge right above the rear wheel), the service dept told me they can either fix the dent and touch up the paint (and still leave a mark if viewed carefully) for $500-600 or restore it to the new condition (sand and repaint) for over $1400.
so, the woman didn't want to go through insurance at first, but also didn't want to pay $1400. she didn't want to give me her insurance info. she cried and begged that she has children and can't afford that. she is now willing to pay $500 but would not pay more than that even if insurance refuse to pay the full amount above deductible.
what would you do?
btw, the first experience at bmw service dept was surprisingly disappointing compared to toyota and infiniti. they rushed their customers and don't call or return calls for estimates. it's an effort to get in touch with them.

Quote: Fix it for $1,400 to bring it back to new again (which cost you $900 if she is willing to pay you $500). Then get into the car and run the damn b!tch over.

I had a very similar situation happen to me when I got my E36, brand new. I had it for about 4 days when a nice lady with 3 kids scraped the side of my car with her monster Expedition. Surprizingly, it left only a VERY small scratch, about three-four inches on the bumper. The alternatives were, get a new bumper for 1,300 bucks, or paint it for $400. I chose option number two. She appreciated my sense of fairness. Stuff happens. We all make mistakes. IT'S just a CAR!!! I'm sure that if they touch it up, no one will notice but you. $1,400 is really a costly mistake for someone who was VERY honest and had an extreme amount of integrity to leave you a note. I like this lady already. How many people leave notes in this day and age?

Go through an independant reliable body shop that has a ding/dent doctor, they will be able to get the ding/dent out for much less and buff/touch up as well. Most BMW dealers outsource their body work, and you will get better service from the body shop. It was nice of the lady to leave her number. I just had to pay $150 deductable out of my pocket b/c someone slammed my mirror off when I parked near the hospital, and never left any information. Boston drivers suck.

thanks for your opinions. the woman didn't call me back with her insurance info as she said she would. i've spent a lot of time dealing with it. i'll leave it to my insurance company to deal with it.

You should be able to get it repaired for LESS than $500.- Look around for reputable body shops that have experience with these cars and ask some friends for referrals.
