I noticed a stange smell, somewhat like a barn the last few days when starting up my X3.
After checking my shoes for dog presents, and looking around inside on the mats etc. I decided to open the hood.
To my surprise there is insulation debris all over the engine and about 25% of the hood insulation is gone.
I also notice lots of small pellets in the circular suspension cups above the front wheels.
Bloody mice living in the engine compartment? Anyway I am afraid the smell might be a dead mouse contained somewhere in the air system.
This car is garaged all the time.
Anyway - set a bunch of traps around the garage, and will take it in to have the air system looked at, and the hood insulation replaced. It looks like a relatively cheap unit to replace.

Quote: | Until you get the mice trapped, put an open container (such as a tuna can) filled with moth balls in the engine compartment. Leave the hood ajar to remind you to remove the container before driving. Farmers do this to keep critters out of combines. | Thanks for the advice - I will try that.

Quote: | Are you sure it's a mice? I know that martens love engine compartments and chew delightfully plastic parts and hoses. | I am pretty sure it is mice because there are little mouse turds left behind.
It also occured in a closed garage.

Damn little critter. Maybe you might consider keeping a cat in the garage. I know they are much better than any mouse trap
