 Theft Question

Please help settle a debate between the wife and I. She is a photographer and thinks it is a great idea to bring along her very expensive camera/lenses on our trip.
I on the other hand worry about theft issues (as well as having to have to lug all this extra crap on MY vacation!)
Has anyone experienced any issues regarding theft, pick pockets, etc while traveling? I just tink we'll stick out like major tourists in our brand new left hand drive BMW and be a target. I'd be curious to here others experiences on the subject.
Thanks

You are right about looking like a tourist does make one more "appealing" to likely/would be thieves.....whether it be here in the U.S. or in a foreign country....I use the same general rule when I'm visiting another country (with the exception of always carrying my passport and a translator).......as when I'm visiting NYC......when traveling out on the streets I always want to do my best to appear to be a local carrying minimal belongings such as a small compact digital camera, cell phone, id, and cash. Never a waistpack.......shoulder bag....large camera around my neck......or backpack (unless I'm doing some sightseeing or traveling "outside" of the city) as these draw obvious attention that you are from out of town.

It really depends on what you like to do during a vacation. I always bring my Nikon D70 with me because taking pictures is what I like to do. Having been to Europe several times, I am not any more worried about theft there than here in the US. In my opinion, theft should not be the reason for leaving something behind. The pain of lugging something around is a better reason to leave it home.

As far as worrying about your car sticking out being left hand drive. Don't worry the places you are plannig to go (Germany, Austria, Italy) are all left hand drive. Your car will blend in. Enjoy your trip!

I have drug SLRs, digital cameras, DV camcorders, and PowerBooks all over Europe and never had a problem.
Just use some common sense and be aware of your surroundings.

In May, I am definitely taking my good camera, camcorder, and PowerBook.

I think part of it to is not sticking out like a sore thumb.
We've all seen them when traveling: white tennis shoes, sweatshirt, fanny pack = American...haha

I have a theory -If I buy it to use it - then use it - If it gets stolen - have it insured. If your not going to use it or be paranoid about it - why buy it in the first place? I do agree with being cautious and trying to fit in. If my wife had the carmera equipment and wanted to lug it around - so be it. Personally, I would prefer a tiny all in one point and shoot.

I think that you should find a reasonable middle ground. If you conspicuously are changing lenses and carrying a large gadget bag on a trip, that is certainly unwise. Discretion is the better part of valor.
