Hi Folks -
I finally paid the dealer for my vehicle today (picking up on 2/16). I paid the dealer entire amount using a personal check. But the Finance guy made me fill out a form (the standard credit application) - and also asked for my SSN.
I debated with him for a while that he should not need my SSN - but his argument was that since it was a $36K+ check - he will need to do a credit check before accepting my check. After 5-10 minutes the discussion was going nowehere - so I asked him about the alternatives and he suggested in whch case I will need to provide a cashiers check.
Providing the SSN is not a huge deal - but I wanted to check if anyone had similar experiences (or can provide a better explaination as to why they will need SSN and do a credit check even if I am paying cash (check)).
Thanks.

What's his problem? If your check bounced all they would need to do would be to not let you have the car.

My parents had the exact same thing happen recently. They paid cash (personal check) for a car and the dealer insisted on running a credit check. This was in LA, so maybe its a California thing...

Thanks. | I think your dealer will need your social security number to do the European Delivery, so he's going to get it anyway....

As the time approached for me to pay for my car I asked the dealer if he would accept a personal check, or if I needed to get a cashiers check. He replied, "A personal check will be fine. We have plenty of time to see if it bounces before the car is delivered to you." No SSN or credit check (and this is California)

I think your dealer is high..I didn't pay the balance but I laid down a check for $25K..no questions asked. And for ED, the only thing I remember giving them is my passport. (??Is my SS on my passport??)
