car is at port awaiting a shipping vessel
my car is at the port waiting for a shipping vessel. what is the normal time frame for the car to be loaded? according to BMW 800-831-1117 automated sytem its been at the port for over a week awaiting a shipping vessel. Car was originally a Euro delivery but was sent straight to the port since the car could not be produced in time for pick up. Since I never picked up the car is it still considered new or is it treated as a Euro delivery and subject to customs?

The only difference is that new cars are cleared electronically, while used cars are actually cleared with paper, and each is inspected by customs individually (although it is a rather cursory inspection).
If your car was not registered, it would not be considered used. That having been said, you saved BMW money on registration and insurance.
Whether it's treated as new or used is really a question of the paper trail. If it is listed as a European Delivery car, then it will go through the manual customs process. Would be interesting to find out how they treated it.

My last 2 EDs had the cars parked at the ports about 9-10 days.
I see you're in California too...my ED last June was approx: 10 days from drop-off (Stuttgart) to ship, 23 day voyage from Germany to California, 10 more days to redelivery in San Diego. The year before I dropped off in Munich and it took one week longer to get redelivered. The ships were departing Bremerhaven for California about every 10 days....I assume that's still the case.
Just a word to the wise: everybody has a different ED redelivery story. Fast boats, slow boats, hangups in port, no hangups in port, 3 days to pass through the VPC, 14 days to pass through VPC....damage, no damage,....trucking delays...no trucking delays.....all of the advice you get here will be good but approximate.

Is this something you cover in you upcoming Roundel article? If not, maybe you could do some investigating for a future story?

The initial wait for the car to be built isn't so bad because of the anticipation, looking forward to the trip, and knowing a date certain that the car will be ready. Waiting for redelivery is excrutiating becaue now you know who spectacular the car is, and how wonderful it is to drive it in Europe. In addition, the redelivery process varies wildly. The car can sit in port before it gets loaded on a ship (mine was 10 days); the transit by ship can vary by a week or more, the car can be held up at customs and VPC for sho knows how long, then truck to dealer and dealer prep also vary. Mine has been sitting at VPC since 1/26 and no one knows why it hasn't been released, just one of things that makes the redelivery process so unbearable. In spite of this, ED is the only way I will ever purchase a car again.
