Here is something for those of you buying the car (i.e. NOT leasing--i.e. you owe tax on the full amount of the car) in the state of California: If you leave the car in Europe for the 90 days allowed (see Adrian's sticky at the top of the forum) and bring it back to California, are you exempted from paying the tax due (or can you get a refund) to Regulation 1620? If so, this could be quite a savings assuming you can safely keep the car in Europe for that long. Please post if you've successfully used Regulation 1620 to get your sales tax on your car refunded (or not paid in the first place).

As for Reg1620, many have tried it and gotten away with it in the early 2000's. You have to have good proof that the car was actually in your possesion for 90 days out of state (storage receipts etc). Lots of RV buyers do this as well.
No, shipping time is not part of the 90 days, but you may find a dmv office who's not knowledgeable with the regulation.

So if I "buy" the car 2.5 month before pickup (assuming that the dealer will agree, I don't see why not).. Then go to Munich and drive the car for 2 weeks.. I can avoid sales and use tax ??? That of course assumes that I will handle the car registration.. not sure if the dealer would agree to that too.. If so, then I'm up for another ED to get a 330i to replace my 325i... And I'll keep the 325i until I take redelivery of the 330i so I get no pain

Do you have to have the car IN YOUR POSSISION? does that mean you can't just buy the car early? Would BMW agree on postponing the shipping or do you have to ship the car yourself? and if you ship yourself do you then not pay the destination charge?

Key is that you have to show possession of the car outside of California for 90 days. For ED, it is easy to do that I think.
