Not wanting to advertise, but I always stay in my own rental apartment in St. Gilgen, a beautiful village on the shores of the Wolfgangsee Lake, just half an hour from Salzburg. As it's my own, I even save the $75/night which is all the rent is for the apartment comprising 1 bedroom, lounge, kitchen, bathroom, terrace, satellite TV, 2 flat-screen TVs, 2 DVDs, telephone, free internet and furnished to a high standard!

I stayed at the InterContinental Berchtesgaden and it was probably one of the best hotel/resorts I've visited that I could think of.
The views were incredible. See below. (The hotel is 1000 m high)

I highly recommend Schloss Haunsperg - a B&B that was a former castle about ten miles south of Salzburg. I've stayed there 5 times in 5 years and wouldn't go anywhere else. The owners are great and will give you good insider info on Salzburg, local restaurants, etc. Check their website at: http://www.schlosshaunsperg.com/schl...erg/estart.htm

I've recommended before Zur goldenen Ente, if you would like an older hotel with character ,located on a pedestrian alley in the old town. Right by the cathedral. No on-site parking, but it's only a short walk to the undermountain parking.

When I was in Salzburg a few years ago, I stayed at the Zum Hirschen. http://www.zumhirschen.at/en/start.php
It's a modern hotel. It's in downtown Salzburg but not in the real historic district (though it's in walking distance to that area). The hotel isn't "quaint" or "charming," but if you want a clean, large room with the modern amenities comparable to an American hotel, you might check it out. One thing that I particularly liked about the place was the breakfast buffet. They had really great pastries... and, oddly enough for a breakfast buffet, they also offered Cokes.
