The ED Redelivery Process?
Clearly ED cars are not a priority after they hit the dock, based on the experiences we are going through. Customs has to be done manually which makes sense, then the VPC, then the carrier, then the dealer. Non ED folks whose car arrived on the same ship got their cars almost a week ago, even as far south as Virginia. The Penalty of ED continues. Now the car is at the dealer. It arrived at the dealer today around 1.30pm. However, when we asked if we could pick it up this evening the answer was, "NO, WE HAVE TO DO SOME STUFF to get the car ready for redelivery. They supposedly need several hours. The car won't be ready until tomorrow evening. I just don't get it THE VPC has to DO STUFF, then the dealer also has to DO STUFF. I would really like to know WHAT STUFF do they really do to the car. I am going to ask the dealer to give all the details on all THE STUFF they did at VPC and the dealer before redelivery. Let's see what tomorrow brings. ad2005 | | Reply » The ED Redelivery Process? | Oh no..I can just imagine the replies to this one...

Anyway, not to create suspense, but I have a detailed description of what happens at the VDC in my article about European Delivery. Since it hasn't been published yet, I can't really quote from it BUT...
New cars and used cars go through a similar process throughout their VDC stay - with the exception of the removal of cosmoline. But the VDC does not try to convert a used car into a new car. It was new when you had it delivered.
They do wash the cars, but if the cars are really filthy, their wash won't get everything off. If there is anything in particular that could impact safety, it will defitely be fixed. If you picked up some chips on the hood while driving, those won't be fixed.
So the VDC really does do stuff.
Now, what each individual dealer does is up to the dealer. Technically speaking, the dealer has no obligation to do anything since PDI was done in Freimann. No reason they can't hand the car over to you. It's your car. You can demand it.
Does that help?

Does that help? | Excellent points.
Santa Barbara BMW used to conduct a smog check and I think my 545 was the last one they did one on, after a huge thread about it here in Bimmerfest.
| | Reply » The ED Redelivery Process? | I would guess that these cars are still "packaged" for shipping after they leave the VPC. After all, you do want the car to survive the trip to the dealer dont you? I would guess that the other stuff includes some paperwork and just cleaning and double checking the car.

Does that help? | All,
Thanks guys for the positive support!
Jspira, I await your article to learn more about what happens at the VPC. I agree, we did demand the car, but no luck. I should have just gone to the dealer and demanded the keys. Well, I know how to deal with the dealer for the next ED. Folks weren't kidding on this forum when they said they would wait to see the car unloaded off the carrier and get it right away. Basically, for the dealer and SA the car is sold, so now they don't care, so what if its off by a few days. So much for customer service. I am going to patiently wait and see if the dealer actually calls me tomorrow and asks when I will be picking up the car.
