I have an already planned trip to Europe last week of september'06 and I'm planning to pick up my bimmer at that time.
Have a couple of related questions:
1. Usually new models (2007 model) start production Sep 1st, am I gonna have enough time to get the 2007 model rather than the 2006 one?
2. Can I ask BMW for a specific delivery date (since my trip dates are already set)? How in advance should I go to the dealer for the order to make sure that gets delivered on that date?

Thx, | On 1, you'll probably get a 2006 model, but search around here, because the question has been asked before.
On 2, yes, you will definitely get a specific date, and the earlier you start the more likely you'll get the one you ask for. You could place your order and get your date now, and the car still won't be built until August or so. You shouldn't have a problem in Sept. getting the date of your choice, though, even if you wait a few months.

Thx, | Yes, absolutely. You should order the car and tell your dealer the date about 3 months prior to your trip. It canīt hurt to do it even earlier and your salesperson will tell you when the order needs to be placed.

As Jspira said, cars are built 30 days before your delivery date, so if you want a September production car, you would need an October delivery date. Mid to late October to be safe. For that kind of a delivery date, you may want to make your reservations now. Octoberfest tends to be a bit... busy 
Well, I just re-read your post and noticed you already have a trip planned for late Sept. A car for that delivery date would probably be built in mid-late August.

Just got confirmation that 5-series will transition to 2007 model year as of March / April 2006

Thx, | My last ED (June 05) had a June 2nd production date (assembly completed) and an approved pickup date of June 21. So the "30 day rule" didn't hold true in my case. I was allowed to pick up 19 days post production so you might be able to do end of Sept. Only your dealer can tell you that and in your case I'd say it's never too soon to have your SA look into it.
