ED Itinerary Question
For those of you that have done ED before, I will be driving from Munich to Lyon France the first day (Mar 13), but would like to stop in Switzerland for lunch and give the family some leg stretching time. So, any ideas on a good town in Switzerland to stop in (not too far off the highway, though) for lunch, shopping, etc...
Thank you.
| | Reply » ED Itinerary Question | Probably over a 700km drive so I would make 2 stops.
You can stop in Lindau first. Not far from the Autobahn to get to the Insel. Worth going to the top of the lighthouse for the view.
Then would recommend 2nd stop just at a reststop maybe between Bern and Lausanne.
When are you going?

We plan on picking up on Monday Mar 13, then drive to Lyon France for the 1st night. Next day continue on to Lourdes, Fr for 2 nights, then drive to Tours, Fr - 1 nt. Then Calais for 1 nt. Euro Chunnel next morning to England where we will spend the next 6nights. I have contacted London for dropoff on Friday Mar 24th. All is set.
I have been to France and England before, so stops there is no problem. However, I have never driven through Switzerland before, that was the reason behind the question. I knew I would have to stop two or three times on the way to Lyon but I was looking for at least one stop to be for lunch, sightseeing and a little shopping. Any further comments are appreciated.
| | Reply » ED Itinerary Question | To me, that is an aggressive schedule, especially if you are picking the car up that day. It is about 750km from Munich to Lyon, and parts are not on motorways. We drove from Strasbourg to Geneva when we were there and it took most of a day. I found the Swiss motorways to be fairly crowded, and it was hard to make very good time. Mind you, that was on a Saturday in July. I expect March would be a lot less busy.
We stopped in Solothurn in Switzerland for lunch, only because it was lunch time. It was ok but not that memorable. Bern is likely a lot better. My very superficial impression of Switzerland was that it was crowded and overpriced. A Swiss franc does not go very far. You also have to buy the Sf40 motorway vignette.
Perhaps my memory is clouded by the fact that we spent a great week after that in the French Alps near Annecy. Talk about twisty roads! It was a blast.
