 Munich Factory Tour

I had emailed BMW Munich to enquire about English tours for the Munich Plant, below is the reply.

"English tours are on Tuesday (6:00 pm), Thursday (6:00 pm) and Friday (1:15 pm)."

Unfortunately, in order to accodomate one of these times I need to completely restructure my travel plans. As currently I am arriving on Wednesday AM and planning to leave Munich early AM on Thursday.

So my question is this -- how worthwhile is the tour? Is it a must see for the ED experience or is it just OK?

Thanks guys.

We did the Munich tour in November, and I HIGHLY recommend it if there's anyway you can work it into your schedule. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Thanks Rich... I was afraid someone was going to say that

So now that means I either need to reschedule my flights to arrive a day earlier or spend an extra two days in Munich... The latter option will cut into Mrs. (err, Dr.) x3Bruin's shopping time in Italy. I think arriving a day earlier will make more sense, and then I should probably also pickup the car a day earlier as well....I'd better start making some calls....

I've taken the BMW factory tour in Munich and the Mercedes factory tour in Stuttgart (I got lost looking for Porshe.)

I have to say that it really helped form my opinion of the companies. You could tell that the BMW people had a bit of dirt under their fingernails and enjoy and celebrate not just the cars but the company and their philosophy. We asked questions and they were excited to answer.

At Mercedes, the ED was really slick but it felt really aloof. There was a lot of talk about how Mercs were the best automobiles in the world, as if it were a given. Perhaps because they wanted the ED customers to be really proud of their purchase. It all felt like a storefront a bit phony.

It didn't help matters that I met a heavy metal drummer in a bar and for a day job he machined MB cylinder heads!

Besides when you tour the factory you're bound to see something interesting in the parking lot!

It's very enjoyable and interesting, although "must see" might overstate it (I guess that's a matter of perspective--if you're a BMW/car nut, then it's probably must see; if just very interested in BMW, maybe not).

You should also look into taking the tour in German. You won't get as much out of it, but you'll see the same thing, and I woudl guess the tourguide will tell you some stuff in English. It might be better than having to rearrange flights or a schedule.

Thats a great idea... I emailed them back asking about a German tour on the day I had originally wanted the tour.

I am a BMW nut have been my whole life, when I was a kid my father only owned BMWs. I was even brought home from the hospital as a new born in a 1972 BMW 2002.

I must confess that I did take a break from driving BMWs for a few years after some horrifying problems with my E30 318is in the early 90s (went with Audi, Saab and VW during that period), but now I'm back.

Thanks for the suggestion...

UPDATE ----

They wrote me back saying that the guide for the German tour speaks no English at all, so if there is an emergency or something having non-German speakers on the tour is a security and insurance liability.

Understandable...so back to Plan A.
