First Post - Be easy on me

As a former owner of a Z3 and 528,,, I am now concidering ED of a 2006 550 SMG.... Please forgive me if these questions have been asked many times - but I searched and didnt see anything specific..

1. I have not gone to the dealer yet.. So I only understand the basic concept of ED from the BMW site and this forum.. Should I be concerned about anything specific

2. Can you negotiate the ED price at the dealer?

3. I will have a trade (2003 911) which I can trade now if needed - How does that work

4. I would like to take delivery in June... Nice time of year to drive from Munchen to Rome... When should I start the process

5. The M package - Is that installed in Munich or state side

6. When is final payment due?

7. Is your ED date firm or can they change it on you? I will be traveling with a small group and it would be difficult to leave the dates open ended...

8. At the end of the day is it really worth it - Or should I just negotiate on a local car and enjoy europe via rail or rent a car.. FYI - I have been in munich, italy, france, etc several times... So this would really be for the ED experiance and some cost savings...

Thank you very much for answering questions that I am sure have been asked many times...

Yes, the wait will suck and most of the savings will be spent on travel.

Yes, some dealers don't want to though. They feel the 7% discount of US MSRP is enough.

Sell it yourself. Or make arrangements that you turn in your trade once your car gets re-delivered in the States.

March. But remember, world cup is happening in Munich in June. Personally, I won't do ED that late. By the time you get your car in the States, you're only a month a way from the new model year.

I think its installed in the VPC in the States. I could be wrong.

14 days prior to Munich Pickup. Your dealer may say 30 days but he/she is working off the old timeline.

In very rare cases, the car is not ready. But 99% of the time, the date they confirm is the date they will deliver.

Depends on what you are after. Some people think its worth 2k in savings to fly over to Munich in one day, sign for the car, and fly back. I do ED's because I enjoy the whole process. I love going to Europe on vacation so I really think doing it via ED is a great experience.

1. Lots of dealers are clueless about ED, so you may end up educating your dealer on the process. It is best to find one who is expierenced with ED.

2. Yes. Since many of the cars do not come out of allocation, you have a bit more negotiating power on those models (including the 550)

3. You will probably have to trade the car at the time you fund the new car.

4. It doesn't hurt to start as early as possible. Generally speaking, however, is that your car has to be built during the month preceeding your scheduled pickup.

5. Stateside.

6. Purchase is due 30 days before pickup, lease is due 14 days before pickup. This will vary between dealers.

7. Once you reserve the day and have it confirmed, it won't change. Another good reason to start the process early.

8. YES YES YES YES YES It is completely worth it.

1. If you have read this forum, you will likely know more than your salesperson. I think all the things to be aware of are well documented here.

2. You can absolutely negotiate the ED price. Just like any other purchase, I would recommend negotiating up from ED invoice.

3. Talk to your dealership about trades. Mine offered to let me keep my current car until redelivery.

4. Probably want to start the process between now and the end of March. Allow some time for negotiating.

5. ???

6. I had to start the financing one month prior to my pickup (purchase). I made my first payment 1 week before I left for Germany.

7. It will take a couple days for them to confirm you date, but then it is firm.

8. I highly recommend doing the ED. I am having the time of my life driving a great car all over Europe. I also have been over here many times, but driving your own car is really something.

Good luck!

Sell that porsche on the private market. At least in Socal, the demand for the 996 911s are very high. Considering yours is still under warranty too you can get a good amount for it.

I just did the ED trip, and have to say it was a great time. There is nothing like driving your new BMW on the autobahn. Just don't go in the winter.
