Qucik Question - ViaMichelin indicates drive time from Venice to Salzburg as 4h40 for 440km...that implies about average of 95km/h (thats barely 60 MPH) . Is this accurate? Why the slow speed? traffic? is it mostly through mountains? Has anyone done this drive in under 4 hours? I would expect average speeds of at least 120-130km/h. |

We did this drive just 8 weeks ago. I was in the passenger seat.....I'll talk to my friend in Stuttgart later today and ask what his thoughts were on that drive...he remembers everything. Lots of mountains and tunnels naturally but I can't remember specifically why it would have only been a 60mph average drive...the part leaving Venice was flat and there was no traffic most of the way.

Just seemed a little odd to me...

I did the drive from Fussen to Venice in about 4.5 hours avg about 85-90 mph. Normal traffic and a couple of construction zones thru Brenner Pass. I guess the speed limits on the Autostradas kept me slow and wasn't really able to open up to +100mph speeds.

MapQuest shows it at 270m @ 4 hrs.
We did this route in spring '01. We kept each day's drive to under three hours. So, we did a one-night stopover in Bolzano, a small town in the Dolomite mountains. It was a quaint little town with a lively market at its center. While I would never make a point to visit there. I would rate it among my most pleasant surpises of the ten or so cities we visited.
If I recall correctly, the drive from Salzburg to Venice is nearly all freeway. Some of it twisty. I doubt it will take you four hours.
