ED - 2 week travel itinerary

Hi everyone -

I am picking up my first BMW (see specs below) on 2/16/06 via ED and need suggestions / comments on the following itinerary. I will be travelling with my wife and twins (<3 years old).

2/14 - US - MUC (United) - got great fares $463 on United / LH (SJC-MUC and ZRH-SFO)
2/15 - Arrive Munich; dau at leisure - see around Marienplatz
2/16 - Pick up and drive to Dachau; visit Munich BMW plant in evening
2/17 - Drive to Neuschwanstein and take romantic road - stay the night in Rothenburg odT
2/18 - All day drive from Rothenburg to Geneva. Any tips on places to check out / route to take appreciated.
2/19 - Geneva - Interlaken
2/20 - Interlaken
2/21 - Interlaken - somewhere enroute to Venice (tips on where to spend the night needed)
2/22 - xxx - Venice
2/23 - Venice (Carnival period)
2/24 - Venice (Carnival period)
2/25 - Venice - Salzburg
2/26 - Salzburg
2/27 - Salzburg - Zurich
2/28 - Dropoff in Zurich and fly back to US

Specific questions that I have:
1. Am I being very aggresive with all that driving with 2 little ones?
2. Any recommendations on drive from Rothenburg to Geneva
3. Any recommendation on drive from Interlaken to Venice. I am thinking that I want to spend the night somewhere within 2-3 hrs of Venice - so that I can reach Venice by 11am - noon.
4. Car parking recommendations in Venice.
5. Any recommendations fos things to do in Austria? Salzburg vs Innsbruck vs Hallstatt
6. Experience with Zurich dropoff
7. I have flexibility with above itierary - any must do things you recommend.

I know I have a lot of questions - hopefully I can capitalize on eveyone's experiences.

Thanks in advance.

First, just to confirm, it looks from your specs that you will have all season tires. I'm checking because Germany requires "winter" rated (M+S) tires during the period you are travelling (through end of March). All seasons count although they do not really substitute for snow tires completely. If the places you are going are pretty clear, you are fine, but Southern Germany has had a very severe winter with heavy snow.

You should be prepared to modify plans based on weather, just in case.

You have a nice leisurely itinerary planned, although I cannot figure out why you would rush the last day to Zürich for dropoff from Salzburg when it would be much easier to drop off in München.

Regarding Salzburg, you might wish to consider spending time in Berchtesgaden. I spent several nights there recently (stayed at the InterContinental Resort, which is brand new and absolutely incredible). You can make a day trip to Salzburg from there and see the city in a day. It´s nice but you don´t need multiple days there.

You have a good trip planned. Salzburg is beautiful, the city fortress is a great tour, and you could visit the birthplace of Mozart. The Cathedral is quite a sight as well.

Innsbruck - I just drove through Innsbruck on the way to Brenner Pass. The weather probably won't be conducive to driving the pass, but you could probably visit the Olympic ground in Innsbruck.

Where are you staying in Rothenburg?

If you MUST go to Interlaken (unless to go skiing) drive Rothenburg-Zurich-Luzern-Interlaken (stay in Luzern if you don't go skiing) Then to Geneva.

From Geneva to Venice drive Lausanne-Sion-Brig load the car on the train (Simplon Tunnel) to Domodossola Italy drive back into Switzerland Malesco-Brisago-Locarno-Lugano
stay a night in Lugano (Hotel Nizza *** ok) next day down on A2 to Chiasso and into Italy
Milano-Brescia--Verona-Padua-Venezia

This way you don't drive the same streches of Swiss freeways twice.

Have fun on your trip

We stayed at Grindenwald; its a small town near Lauterbrunnen valley. Check out www.myswitzerland.com for hotel info. The entire area near interlaken is very pretty - you can't go wrong.

Thanks for the tip on tires - I am NOT taking the Sports package - so I am assuming that the standard tires are all weather. I will anyway check with my BMW center tomorrow.

I had a very different itinerary earlier and had planned to go to Switzerland at the last leg of my trip and fly back from Zurich. However - I have to now meet a few friends during my trip - hence I had to change my plans. If I have to fly from Munich - I will need to change airline tickets - this will potentially cost $$$$.

I will take your advice and only spend 1 day in Salzburg and probably leave a day earlier for Zurich and spend the additional night somewhere between Salzburg & Zurich. Any suggestions on this are welcome.

Thanks.
