 BMW Rental in Europe

So I know this isn't necessarily the best place to post this, but I did the ED thing two years ago and I had a blast. However, I'm going back to Europe but this time I won't be picking up a brand new car. But I want to be able to show a friend around in the same way that I got to see Germany, Austria, and France. Does anyone know a good place that rents BMWs but potentially allows renters to rent in one country and return in another?

During my last ED, we rented a car from Hertz at Munich airport; the dropoff for the car was in Paris, for which there was a $140 surcharge. They gave us a Peugeot (mid-size to full-size car) - you could insist while making the reservation that you are looking only for a BMW.

Hertz rents BMWs in it's Prestige Edition. Don't know about the availability of 1-way drop-offs for Prestige class cars though.

I travel to Germany 1-2 times a year to visit family so I have frequent rental experience. I usually rent through http://www.gemut.com. In most cases it goes through AutoEurope to Avis or National.

They seem to have no problem with one way rentals as I've done it several times before. However, if you drop-off outside the origin country, you may have to pay a large fee. For example - I think Avis will hit you for nearly $400 in service charges to drop off in Italy (assuming you rented from Germany). Others rental companies have different fees and some country pairs have no fee.

With that in mind, I have seen many BMWs, Audis and MBs in the rental garage at Munich Airport. Depending on what you rent, the AutoEurope to Avis connection usually garners a free up grade to the next class of vehicle so if you rent a VW Passat sized car, they upgrade you to a MB E-Class sized car. However, unless it is a specialty vehicle, I don't think any rental agency will guarantee you a particular car make. Naturally, if you're at the rental counter, you could request on of the BMWs and you'll probably get it. Just don't be too disappointed if you don't get one.

Also, try to get a diesel - BMW (as well as many other makes) have impressive diesel engines. Plus it gets better fuel economy and costs less per litre.
