ED Delivery & tour pics
The day has finally come! I just picked up my car! It's hard to contain the excitement. I thought I'd post these as an appetizer before heading out (gotta respect the 12 hour rule!). More coming in the following days as I have connections. Off to Rothenberg today, Romantic Road after that towards Fussen. First shot is signing the Bimmerfest book. | | Reply » ED Delivery & tour pics | congrats!...keep the posts & pics comming. The ED pics/stories are always my favorite part of this site...look forward to more detail of your trip

| | Reply » ED Delivery & tour pics | An update with some more pictures from the last two days. We first headed to downtown Munich to check out the Marienplatz and do some shopping. The snow was coming down pretty good, a nice White Christmas. We then took the autobahn over to Ulm, and then up to Rothernberg for the night. The drive was all A9 & A7, so it was pretty smooth despite the snow/rain/ice and all the trucks.
Rothenberg is a very quaint town, to say the least. It wasn't as overrun with Christmas tourists as I feared, though I did see a lot of Japanese there with their huge tour busses. We stayed at the PrinzHotel which is just inside the city wall, and has plenty of parking right outside. It was 65 euro for a double, booked on HRS the night before. The room was certainly nothing to write home about, but was clean & fine for the price. Once word of warning for those who use HRS too book hotels: take the descriptions of ammenities with a grain of salt - even though it says the rooms feature tubs and internet access, and even if you specifically request a queen/king bed, there's no guarantee you'll get it. The lady at the front desk laughed when I asked if they had Internet access! I forget how much I take the Internet for granted these days, without it it's a lot harder to plan things day-to-day (weather, hotel reservations, viamichiln.com, etc.).
After seeing a weather report on CNN that showed Germany and everything east of it under heavy clounds w/rain & snow for the next three days at least, we decided on a change of plans to take advantage of the dryer, warmer climates a bit further south. We've knocked both Holland & Czech off the itinerary in favor of Switzerland & Italy, then Austria. We took the autobahn to Zurich and explored around downtown a bit. Then we drove over to Lucerne where we are staying at the Montana Art Deco Hotel (very nice, 5 star, if a bit pricey (what isn't in Switzerland!?). We plan to explore a bit in the morning and then probably head to Italy for Christmas.
I'll post the pictures below.
A few impressions so far: - American cars: there are a lot more Ford/GM(Opel, Chevy, Pontiac)/Chrysler cars on the autobahn that I expected! Being one who's not a big fan of American cars, I found it pretty depressing. :} - wagons: I think I saw more wagons than I've ever seen in the states. Lots of 325 & 525 xit's, along with Mercedes, Audi, Volvo and others. - Swiss roads are nice! They put that 28 euro/car tax to good use in Switzerland, the highways are the best I've ever driven on, even better than the German autobahn
