Thanks. Happy new year to you as well. I know Silvester is what they call New Year's Day in Poland, because of the name day. Do they use that in other countries as well?

Silvester is 31. December. Silvester was a Pope and the day, or really eve, is noted for merriment making.

Several traditions include das Bleigießen, or lead pouring, something I haven´t done since I was a kid. You melt a small amount of lead in a spoon over a flame, and then it´s poured into a bucket of cold water. The pattern or figure is then interpreted to predict your fortune for the new year.

In Austria, going to Die Fledermaus is a tradition, as is the New Year´s Day concert in the Musikverein (which is broadcast across the world - in the U.S. look for it New Year´s Day on your PBS channel).

When I lived in Germany, we always watched ,,Dinner for One``. ,,The same procedure as every year, James.”
