I have always broken in new cars with low speeds before pushing the engine hard and fast.
I am going to purchase my first BMW through ED. Can I immediately drive fast on the Autobaun without a break period for the 530i engine?

To answer your question, can you skip the break-in period: no, of course not. Why would you think that there is an exemption? This is just for the first 2000 km. (After that, you still need to take it easy a little.) That having been said, once I hit 2000, I was cruising as much as possible at 220-240. BTW, it's Autobahn, btw, not Autobaun.

(an occassional burst up to 120 or 130 mph won't kill you) The break in period is for the first 1200 miles. You should also vary your speed...don't keep it pinned at 90 mph for hours on end. All of this info will be given to you at the delivery center.

Take a few drives through the mountain passes (Brennerpass for example), that will help break-in your car.

Eh. I tried to keep it under 100 mph during my first few hundred miles. Then I slowly ran her higher, but I was sure to vary between 80 and 110 for most of it. I would sometimes do 120, but not for more than a few minutes.
I never floored the throttle and rarely saw higher than 4,000 revs. I think you can go past some of the suggested numbers while using a little common sense.
How many opps are you going to have to drive the autobahn like this?

Herr Roller (center director) at the delivery center told me to ignore the tempo (speed) and not go over 4000 rpm. With that as a limit, it was easy to go 180 km/h. I varied the revs quite a bit (happens naturally on many Autobahnen as trafic slows down in areas) and made it through the first 2000 km without a problem. By the time I got to 2000 km, I was ready for the full treatment of going to 240+.
