I am really considering ED. Right now I am at the stage of calculating costs.
I am making the assumption that I can spend 1500-1700 on the trip if I go for about 3-5 days.
500 for air
400-500 on lodging for 5 days.
400-500 on food.
200 for any other expenses....
Are others who actually been there spending about this much? A breakdown of expenses would be great.

Depends on where you drive, where you stay, and what you eat - costs can vary greatly.

do not forget to multiply almost all trip expenses by 1.2 (est) for the conversion and do not count pennies.. have a blast, do what you want and remember that reality will be 1000's of miles away.. so enjoy!!!!!
we spent about 4k over 12 days.. we did not want for anything and had a blast.. we figured that we would spend our ED car savings for one heck of a trip.. no regrets!!!

my expense breakdown goes something like this:
4 days in munich, 1 in venice, 2 in florence and 1 in zurich.
lodging- i averaged out $100/night
gas- $300-400
airfare- $500
food- $400
tolls and park fees- $150
goodies i bought home- >$1,000
overrall the entire trip cost me $3,033

I usually plan on spending E100 a day cash (Gas, food, trinkets etc.) excluding hotel expenses which I charge. We only make reservations for first and last nights so thats fixed, in between who knows what we'll spend. Our last trip cost around $3000 for 10 days...but we stayed with friends 3 days. That works out to $300 a day with hotel which is reasonable...if you don't go nuts in Paris like we did. That doe's not include airfare, we did the 2 for 1, Wilson Travel really screwed up the reservations and basically gave us our money back, so that was free.
