what are the license requirements ?

Search for "international driving permit" or "international driver's license" and you'll find some discussions of this topic.

It's claimed that you ought to have an IDP (which is basically a translation of your real driver's license), but I haven't heard of any enforcement of that requirement. What you do need to look out for is the enforced requirement to purchase a vignette to drive on the freeways in Austria (and Switzerland).

You can get a International Driving Permit for $10 through any AAA Office. You can download a form on the AAA site, send them 2 passport pics, a copy of your driver's license and the $10 by check and you'll get your permit within a week and usually faster.

I personally think it's worth it; in case, you're stopped.

If you don't speak the native language and only have a U.S. drivers license, you may be in for a surprise.
