E46 M3 or E39 M5?
Now that both of these cars can be picked up around the same price, what would you choose & why?

its hard to choose between the two, because theyre both so damn sexy!
but, since i cant choose both and smaller cars are more my bag, i have to say the M3

Tough choice......the M3 would be more fun in the twisties and probably would get more looks, but dang the V8 of the M5 sounds AMAZING, and the extra space of the sedan is always a plus!

There were 4x as any E46 M3s sold in the US as M5s, and the ratio you(I?) actually see on the street is probably more on the order of 25-30:1.
Put a little work into it, and the M5 can easily handle better than the M3, all the while still being much more comfortable. Yet, short of going blown, the M3 isn't going to beat a stock M5 in a straightline. So, spend maybe $2k on the M5's suspension, and you've got the best of both worlds. That was my rationale, anyway 
Much love for the M3, though. It's a world class car and a benchmark even on the dawn of its replacement.
