ED in Mar'06 - Question on Germany & France itinerary
I am thinking of doing my second ED mid-March 2006. I had my first ED in Oct 2003 where I drove from Milan to Madrid for about 10 days and 3000 miles (stops at Fussen, Chur, Lake Maggiorre, Lugano, Lake Como, Provence, and Barcelona.) That drive was preceded by another drive using car rental from Amsterdam to Munich (ordered an enconobox with 150 Euro drop-off charge but was replaced with a BMW 320i with no drop-off charge nor additonal charge for upgrade to higher class car since that car had a German license plate and needed to be returned to the Munich office.)
I got a lot of information from this forum for my first one so I try to ask around again,
I have been searching this forum for driving conditions in March and still a bit confused wether it is advisable to get the sport package for mid March delivery. I am planning to drive and/or stay in the following cities/regions: Munich, Regensburg, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Alsace, Burgundy, Luxembourg, and end in Frankfurt. I usually prefer country roads rather than Autobahns. Is the trip do-able in the mid-March timeframe? Will I encounter snow during this period in those regions? Any good alternatives or substitutes.
Thanks.

Average high temp. is 8° and average low is 0°, with average daily temp of 3°. If there is precip. and the temperatures are slightly cooler, snow is possible of course. My recommendation would be that you don't plan a firm itinerary, and make your choices of the next day's destination based on the weather forecast the night before. The only accurate forecast is a 24 h forecast, and even that is subject to change. I did my most recent delivery in mid November. Temperatures were in a similar range. I didnīt encounter any snow but just two days after I left, there was a huge snowstorm and it continued snowing off and on for days.

Certainly one wouldn't want to plan a drive into a snow storm....but I've never heard of anyone planning a European driving experience based on where the weather is going to be the best the next day!!! With this logic one might spend a balmy few days in the most boring places of Europe while missing some of the greatest and most beautiful sights!
For me it's all about the destination....whether I'm going to be chilly or not.
By the way...what are you going to do in Stuttgart? I've been there twice this year and it's not nearly as nice as Munich.

Certainly he didn't say that to only go where the weather is best, but the idea is to alter the destination when the driving conditions are not favorable due to weather.

The cities/regions I listed might not be the exact place where I will stop or stay overnight. In general my plan is to go slightly north east from Munich then head west towards France and head slightly north east towards Frankfurt where I will drop off the car.
I am not too familiar with the weather or driving condition in those regions. Since guide books do not tell much about driving condition I was thinking that some people here might have first hand experience driving through the regions in approximately the same time period.

If it turns out those regions tend to be unfavorable for driving with summer tires then I might change my plan accordingly.

We went Munich, Nurnberg, Dingolfing Tour, Rothenburg ob Tauber, St. Goar, Luxembourg, Nancy and back to Munich in aboug 6 days.
Hope you get lucky like us and get good weather like we did.
