 Just got back from ED

Hi,

Just got off the plane from picking up my ED 550i. Before I forget, a couple of items I wanted to share.

1. BMW should put on winter tires for ED during winter seasons. My drive from Munich to Venice was great most of the time. Then there was icy/snow during the drive through Austria, I lost control of the car and spun twice. Scared the scrap out me me I tried a couple of gas station to get chain with no luck because of the sport 18" tire size.

2. The drop-off at Venice, Italy was smooth. I felt confident that my car was in good hand with the driver taking my car back to Munich.

3. I ordered SMG without a test drive. Then after reading many post about SMG's automate mode, I was thinking the worst. But I found that SMG automate mode very acceptable. I think I drove in the Automate mode most of the trip. Thought when there is a need for a little kick, SMG rules!!! I am happy with the choice.

Again.. Thanks for all the help from this forum.

-Mike

Welcome back... and congratulations.

Re your item 1.), would you really want your car just to have winter tires? This is why most people here consider the e.d. season to be over after mid November.

Also, FYI, chains are not legal on the Autobahn. FYI, with chains, you are limited (according to the instruction manual from BMW) to a speed of ca. 50 km/h.

BMW could just swap the tires when it's ship back to US? Too much to ask? Regarding legal or not/speed, I had to slow down to 20 mph and it was still slipping. Atleast the chain would give me back control of the car. I was also told that it's illegal to drive without winter tires during the winter season.

Mike,

I also recently returned from a ED trip getting my 550. My car arrives in the US this week. I have been looking for snow tires and found an interesting fact. There are no run flat snow tires made for the rears (sport pkg sized)! I agree there should be an option for winter deliveries.

It's not illegal yet, but will be as of 1. January.

That notwithstanding, if you had had an accident using tires not suitable for conditions during your trip, Gerling would not have covered you.

Two questions for anyone that can help.

1. Does the 550 come with summer only tires? I found multi-season tires acceptable during a really bad Swiss winter (it was a 6 month long ED ) - it was often necessary to drive carefully and be very much aware of driving on the snow.

2. Is it illegal to drive _without_ winter tires or _with_ summer (only) tires?

Like Jspira said chains are not really suited for major roads unless the conditions are really bad. Most people use them to get out of their subdivisions, up steep incline (read ski resorts) etc.

Just two more weeks and I'll be there visiting some top ski resorts again
