Live on east coast, delivery on west coast?

Hi,

I live in Maine and I'm planning on purchasing a 2007 530xi next fall.

What I want to do is participate in the ED and enjoy two weeks of travel there.

Then, I'll drop it off for return.

BUT, I want it returned to the west coast (Southern California), fly there where it arrives, and then drive it back to Maine on a leisurely cross-country trip.

1. How long does it take for the car to arrive back in the states after dropping it off?

2. Is this even doable?

3. My local dealer looked at me like I had 3 heads. Must I purchase the car from a California dealer?

4. I expect that taxes would be paid as would be in any cross-state purchase, in the state of residence.

Anyone know anything about this?

You can get a courtesy delivery to almost any dealer for $500.

But keep in mind, transport to the w. coast from Europe takes much longer than to the east coast.

That notwithstanding, your plan sounds like a nice idea and a nice way to enjoy the car.

Thanks for your reply.

Actually, a longer delivery time to the west coast would work out just fine.

We'd like to return to Maine after our trip and then have several weeks before we fly out to California to begin the next leg of our trip.

It actually works out better for you because of the competition in California they are more likely to discount the price. Let me know if you want, and I can put you in touch with my dealer here in Southern California. He handled my Euro Delivery, was very knowledgeable, and gave me a great deal on the car. Great guy.

I agree that it makes sense to buy the car in So Cal.....there will be no "courtesy fee" and it will just be simpler. As others have stated you'll most likely get a better deal in So Cal because our sales volume here is much higher.

As for the length of the journey on the ship.....it's not that much longer to ship to the west coast. My last ED ship took 21 days from Bremerhaven to LA. Many ships leaving Germany take 14 days to get to NY because they stop in so many ports on the way.

Good luck!

Keep in mind, if you buy it out of state, the service you get from your local dealer may not be the same. For example, many dealers give loaners and do valet service (loaner and pickup) for customers who bought the car from them - but do not offer this to customers who did not. If this isn't important, then it's just as well as you may end up with a lower price in California.
