What I loved about the Autobahn

The design of the US Interstates and the Autobahn are very similar, so it is very easy to get used to it. But driving on the Autobahn was so much more fun because...

1) They are so well maintained - I never saw a pothole which was amazing since it snows so much and they plow it and salt it, but the roads were in perfect condition.

2) No reflector studs between lanes, made lane changing comfortable

3) Everyone follows the rule of staying to the right except to pass

4) Nobody ever passes on the right

5) Trucks had lower speed limits and they keep to it - in general the truck traffic although just as busy, was much more subdued and more courteous.

These were my impressions from only a few hours on the Autobahn. Maybe the more experienced Autobahn drivers have other impressions?
Does road rage exist in Germany - or is that an American thing?

Excellent analysis. Learning to drive is treated much more seriously in Europe. I doubt many Americans would pass the tests required to get a German license.

Re Road Rage, only once have I seen anything slightly resembling this, and it was just a woman who was talking on her Handy who wasn't paying attention. Nothing like what makes for good headlines in the States. But my driving impressions are mostly from Austria, Germany, and environs. Your results may differ elsewhere.

I'm amazed they pass the tests here passed on what I see daily. I miss driving in Europe; it was so relaxing compared to the U.S., even with elevated speeds.

I think the autobahn flows better than interstates here in the US. Also, some of the countryside you just can't put words to. Amazingly beautiful. Especially at 140.

Well....that's what happens when your tax, registration etc. money actually go where they are supposed to. I cannot imagine German taxpayers tolerating potholes. They would revolt.
But these United States of America are different.

Anyway....I do not mean to go political here.
What I enjoy the most in Autobahn is its courteous drivers. On a recent trip, there were times when I wanted to kick back and enjoy the scenery at 100 kph, and there were other times when I wanted to get serious and cover some distance, pushing it to 170+ kph. At no time did I feel uncomfortable with my speed or with me creating a problem to surrounding drivers.

Here in the US, if you do 65 mph on the far right lane, you will be taunted by Mr.smart who passes everybody from the right, zig-zagging and all! If you do 85 mph on the far left lane you will get pulled over before you say "VROOM"

Bottom line, in the US, the road and the morrons around you control your trip....over there you control your trip without being a morron.

I have a court day tomorrow for my one of two outstanding VROOM tickets.. I hope the officer doesn't show up...

Loved the Autobahn at ~140MPH, even when it was only 2 lanes and with almost no shoulder
