so i just got off the phone with dependable auto shippers and they said they can only ship the x3 and most other newer bmw sedans in enclosed trailers due to the lack of some attachment point which most other cars have, and which bmw had before 1996.
can anyone verify this as true?
can anyone recommend any other auto shippers?

Most newer BMWs have tie down straps under the rocker panels. On an E36 if you look under there the hockey puck lookign thing covers the holes up. If the shipper is worth anything they should have the "t-hooks" that go into the those holes.
I'd find another shipper.

Hmm, I had my '02 BMW shipped, unenclosed, without any problems....
Enclosed isn't a bad idea, though, as far as the safety of your car.
I would call up the shipping company and drill them and see what they are talking about

We've shipped cars twice cross country. Never moved a BMW.
If you pay more, and ship enclosed, they arrive quite a bit cleaner, which isn't so upsetting when you take delivery. If you think about what your car looks like when you drive it cross country (dead bugs, dried water spots, bird crap) and add in any fears you may have of vandalism, rock pits on windshields, etc., you may be happier going that route.

If you are moving your own car I'd do covered just for the protection.
But if you are, for example, shipping it to someone who bought it from you then I'd look elsewhere.
