Switzerland Travel Questions
This board is great. I'm currently in the process of planning my mid April ED trip and have already learned a lot from others experience.
The current plan is to head from Munich through Innsbruck, Bolzano, and Verona to the Lake Como area. From there head towards the Valais and Bernese Oberland areas of Switzerland. From Switzerland head north towards Strasbourg and then back to Munich cutting through the Black Forest.
My specific question is regarding travel routes from Italy into Switzerland. Will the passes like the Simplon and Furka be open? Would it be advisable to try and cross them in a 530i with sport package at this time of the year? Has anyone taken their car through the Lotschberg Tunnel? Or the tunnel that takes you under/around the Furka pass?
Also, if anyone has any suggestions about good places to stop or great roads to travel (for fun, scenery or both) along the intended route I'd appreciate it.

Generally in Switzerland, you should have no problems on all the major Autobahns.
Some of the smaller roads do get closed down depending on weather. Depending on where you are and how small the road is. If the weather has been good for a while and the roads have been cleared, you should be able to get to most places. Even then, they do close some roads for avalance danger...
Good luck -- drive in the Swiss Alps are beautiful...
One thing to note is that you will need to stop at the Swiss Border and buy an Autobahn sticker for your car -- its about $20-$30 and is essentially a tax to drive on the Autobahn (annual sticker). The fine for not having the sticker is pretty steep, so its worth getting it...

Speaking of passes, many of them are closed a good part of the year ... sometimes as early as mid-September until as late as mid-May. For a good source of information about driving in Switzerland Look here.
